“Be still and know that I am God…” (Ps. 46:10a ESV) How hard it is to simply “be still”! We live in a fast paced world. We want fast food, faster internet speed, faster communication options, etc. etc. Unless we are intentional about it, we rarely if ever let ourselves “be still”.
In his book “Intimacy with the Almighty” (Word Publishing Dallas, TX 1996), Charles Swindoll writes these words “We are commanded to stop (literally)…rest, relax, let go, and make time for Him. The scene is one of stillness and quietness, listening and waiting before Him. Such foreign experiences in these busy times! Nevertheless, knowing God deeply and intimately requires such discipline. Silence is indispensable if we hope to add depth to our spiritual life… It sharpens the keen edge of our souls, sensitizing us to those ever-so-slight nudgings from our heavenly Father.” (p. 38)
In my last entry “Dreams and Disappointments” (March 11, 2016), I wrote about the times of disappointment when it seemed God was silent. I know that I have not disciplined myself enough to have those regular times of stillness and silence before my God. Perhaps, I didn’t have direction because I was too distracted to hear His answers. Intentionally spending time in His Word where we learn of His nature and character, and being still to just listen are crucial steps we must take in order to know who this God is, the One that we say we trust.
Before we can go this way or that, we need to know the One who sees the bigger picture; the One who knows us intimately and loves us. What is it you are needing to know about God or from God? Do you need to know Him as protector, as provider, as all-knowing, as always loving, as merciful and forgiving, as compassionate, as mighty? These descriptions are just some of His name and character! Spend time with Him, let Him show you your next step, and then you can go on your way. May you go forth in joy!
Dear Lord, I confess I do not often let myself stop and just be still. Help me to do so, so that I can KNOW you! Show me more of who You are, and how to find in Your presence the peace and wisdom that I need! Thank you! I love you!
I want to share a song I love to listen to, when seeking to be still before God. Listen and be blessed! “Come to the Quiet, Psalm 131” Talbot, John Michael (Sparrow Corp. 1980).
